Running To Find My Mind
This week I will hopefully convince you why running is the perfect past time for you.
I will talk about:
The health benefits of running
The mental benefits
The social benefits
Why I run.
I view running as a form of meditation. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I just put my running shoes on and go. It doesn’t matter where I go as long as I can run far and fast.
1. The Health Benefits
It goes without saying that running will make you healthy. But, actually knowing the benefits will make you more likely to go for a run!
All of the statistics gathered here are from reputable health sites.
Health line states:
“Studies show that running just 5 to 10 minutes each day at a moderate pace may help reduce your risk of death from heart attacks ,strokes, and other common diseases.”
Now there should be no excuse to not run for at least 5 minutes every day! And don‘t lie to yourself, you always have time in your day to spare 5 minutes.
But you should also know the risks.
Healthline also states that to avoid an overuse injury:
Make sure you have appropriate running shoes and change out your shoes often.
Gradually increase the number of miles you run each week.
Mix up running days with cross training, such as cycling or swimming.
Warm up before you run and stretch after.
Run with proper form.
2. The Mental Benefits
Running not only gives numerous physical benefits but also lots of mental benefits. My own experience in running has led me to believe that is in fact true!
I was once going through a really hard time due to my anxiety and attaining the grades I needed. So I decided to go for a run.
During this run I met lots of lovely dogs and one person, in particular, that would change my view on anxiety forever.
That special person was my Italian teacher trying to walk her hyperactive dog!
We both stopped and chatted for a while and I explained the reasons why I had not been attending lessons.
She told me that she goes through the exact same thing. And it flicked a switch in my head.
I am not alone. I have people to talk to who care for me. That is what you should tell yourself whenever you feel anxious or down.
This mantra is life-changing and will honestly help you in understanding the potential you have.

3. The Social Benefits
You are wondering why there is a whole section dedicated to social benefits but I feel that the act of running in public is perfect to strike up conversations with dog walkers or other runners!
You can also join a running club if you feel uncomfortable running alone. These clubs are fantastic as you really get to meet people from all ends of life and see how they all come together for this one simple activity -running.
Even more, you can apply for big running events such as the London or Boston marathon and raise money for the charity of your choice!
I ran the Canterbury half-marathon last summer with a group of my friends and it was one of the funniest experiences ever
